Outpatient Treatment for Anxiety and Depression

Monima offers two outpatient treatment program options for clients coping with moderate to severe anxiety and/or depression. Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) provide two distinct levels of care so each client receives the support they need.

The Difference Between IOP and PHP

The key differentiator between PHP and IOP is the amount of time clients spend per week engaging in therapy and with our medical providers. PHP and IOP have been intentionally designed to offer two distinct levels of care that address the various medical, physical, emotional, and psychological needs of each individual.

IOP for Anxiety and Depression

Monima’s Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) was built for women seeking part-time treatment for moderate to severe depression and/or anxiety. IOP is designed specifically for women ready for a level of support above traditional weekly therapy, or as a stepping stone between a full-time recovery program — such as PHP or residential treatment — and returning to their daily routines full-time. Clients in the IOP program receive 9-15 hours of therapeutic engagement per week.

PHP for Anxiety and Depression

Our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is the highest level of care available at Monima. PHP is best suited for clients with severe depressive symptoms that have begun to interfere with daily life and continue to persist despite therapy or medication. Most clients take a leave of absence from work, school, or their daily routines to fully commit themselves to the program. While in PHP, clients will be engaged in group and individual therapy five to six hours per day, five days a week.
Monima has partnered with Ohana Recovery Residences to provide optional safe housing for women enrolled in Monima Wellness outpatient programs. Women who stay at Ohana experience an immersive, supportive recovery environment with a like-minded female community.

FAQs

While effectiveness varies from one individual to the next, one of the most effective treatments for depression and anxiety is a combination of psychotherapy and medication. Psychotherapy, for example Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), enables individuals to identify and change negative thought patterns and/or behaviors. Concurrently, medication, such as antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications, can help regulate brain chemicals and alleviate symptoms. This comprehensive and holistic approach addresses both the psychological and physiological aspects of these conditions, improving the chance of a successful and lasting recovery.

While not the recommended route for mental health treatment, all primary care providers (i.e. doctors, nurse practitioners and physician’s assistants) can diagnose mental health conditions and prescribe medication. However, the more effective route tends to be finding a mental health professional (i.e. psychiatrist, therapist, counselor) — these are the experts in the field and are equipped to put together the best fit treatment plan, which may include medications, to reduce the symptoms of anxiety and depression. Therapists and counselors (also referred to as psychologists) are not able to prescribe medication while psychiatrists primary responsibility is to diagnose and treat mental health disorders. Psychiatrists are responsible for prescribing, monitoring, and adjusting any mental health medications as needed to fit each the unique needs of each patient.

Medication is as unique as the client therefore all clients are fully evaluated to determine the best medical supports for their needs. Monima works with each client to evaluate ongoing medication needs and is monitored for treatment effectiveness throughout their stay. Clients work closely with the physician and clinical team to monitor any potential adverse reactions, and medications are adjusted as client needs evolve.

Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) for depression and anxiety are very effective because they provide the next level of care above basic therapy or psychiatric medication. Clients seeking outpatient programs like IOP or PHP (partial hospitalization programs) often turn to an outpatient program when basic or typical treatment (i.e. therapy or medication) has not provided relief of symptoms. Many clients in outpatient programs are facing symptoms of anxiety and depression that are interfering with their daily life.

The most common treatment plan for depression and anxiety includes a combination of psychotherapy (i.e. CBT, DBT, EMDR) and medications. In addition, lifestyle changes (i.e. regular exercise, stress reduction techniques), talk therapy, outpatient programs, and learning how to manage stress are also common treatment options that can be used in tandem with other treatment modalities.

Each treatment plan is tailored to the individual’s specific symptoms, severity of the condition, medical history, and personal preferences, with the aim of addressing both the psychological and physiological aspects of anxiety and depression for the best possible outcome. Keep in mind, it may take some testing of combos to discover which treatments work best for you, and it’s important to connect with a mental health professional during your treatment journey to ensure a safe and effective journey towards mental wellness.
